The city diaries 2: Driving tips, or may be not

Image
Bangalore is a nice and beautiful city. Nice in terms of climate, facilities available, helpful people etc. But sadly Bangalore is nicer if you stay indoor most of the time. A huge percentage of the 'helpful people' I mentioned earlier, turn out to be the ultimate propagators of road rage when they drive or ride. They never stop, unless there is a train in their way (I doubt that too!), they drive at the maximum (im)possible speed, almost everywhere and above all they are totally ignorant about the fact that road is a public space. The below tips are derived from fellow drivers/riders on Bangalore roads and in no way I can relate to any of these. So, these tips are better implemented if you are all alone in a city and only if so. Road rage is the norm here.. Nokia, no more!

Image
Well, when I bought my first Nokia 2300 phone in 2006, I never thought I would be writing a post of this nature about Nokia. Then, I was excited to have one of the first phones with radio and polyphonic ring tones in Indian market. 'Snake' was THE game then and the phone used to grab eyeballs too! Nokia 2300 (Image source: Extra GSM ) But most of all,  2300 was durable to an extent I can describe only by the end of this post. I enjoyed music, played games and used it for the primary purposes of calling and texting over the years. The only prominent replacement/repair was that I changed the battery after 2 years of my use and yes, it came to me as a used phone in 2006. A satisfied customer, becomes a repeat buyer and hence a core customer of the company, says marketing gurus. Hence, when I had enough of disposable income to turn a small dream in to reality, I bought a Nokia N70 in 2007. I paid around 13500 INR (about 240 USD) for the N70 compared to the 2000 INR tha...

The demand-supply gap of dreams and realities

Why does India have lesser young entrepreneurs compared to the US or a lot other countries? I think there are two basic issues here; 1)As a preceding generation we are not responsible enough to nurture dreams or to motivate the younger generation 2) Bigger dreams, mostly, are not getting materialized. In this post, I shall try and elaborate on why I think these two issues are prevailing. Though I was introduced to 'Maslow's hierarchy of needs' during my MBA, just like a lot of things introduced to me during that time, Maslow lost to me in my search of 'hierarchy of survival'. Anyhow, I just dug a little bit deeper in to Maslow's pyramid recently and I think it makes sense to me in a wider perspective now. In Indian context it takes a lot of time to reach from the bottom of the pyramid to the top, after which the materialization of big dreams are supposed to happen. When you look at the pyramid, there are physiological, safety, love and esteem levels, bef...

The city diaries 1: Focus and fill

Image
I am starting a series about certain things I come across in Bangalore. Things which I think others should know and might help them in some way or other. This series might not be regular, you may expect random posts in between, however all related posts will be named as 'The city diaries'. These posts are supposed to be informative, hoping to add a tint of positivity. I have been a resident of Bangalore for the last 8 months only and one of the first things we possessed here was a bike. Since then I've been riding an average of 40 kilometres everyday, mostly to work. Riding is an exhausting task in Bangalore traffic, unless you do not care about traffic rules and fellow riders, like a good percentage of bike/scooter riders here. And when you think that you figured your way out around riding in Bangalore, another problem hits you; fuel. Fuel prices are growing faster than an average Indian's dream of daily survival, but that's a national phenomena (yes, the...

How strong are you?

Some weeks back, my wife went out of the town for a project release for a couple of days and I had to deal with a bachelor's life for two long (OK, may be not that long) days. I did not get much time to stay at home as I had to finish the pre-joining procedures for my new job. In those two days, I managed to get clicked a horrifying image of mine (again) for the employee id card, had pizza for lunch, had a back breaking 1400 kilometres journey in two days. Well, there was no one to monitor me for two days and did I get in to trouble? Yes, I managed to get in to a bit of it. I was on the way to board my bus to Kerala (the first 700 kms of 1400) and it was too early to reach the boarding point, considering the fact that most of the buses operating in this route start at least 45 minutes late. I thought of catching up with my friend and got down near the forum mall and gave him a call. The unexpected happened then, I was on the footpath, which also serves as a park...
