Dark knights and bright days
Conflicts, they just don't leave us alone, do they? It doesn't even need another person for conflicts, for me it's mostly internal. Some times it might be the classic 'to be or not to be' and some other times it will be more complicated 'what to be or what not be', of course with all other 'W's and one H in the line. And when it comes to right or wrong, we mostly use our own scale of relativity. The conflict is not as apparent as to join the darker side or to remain clean. Most of the times it is about how far we can go to the darker side.
With his three movies on Batman, Nolan made me think about this a little deeper. Starting with a crime flooded city and its need for a redeemer, he takes us to endless mind games in the second movie. In the third story, it looked like an ultimate victory of good over bad but, interestingly, the conflict was between darkness and darkness. Bruce Wayne conquers his darkest fears to become Batman. He fights injustice and crime, hand in hand with darkness. He had to deal with a series of conflicts, both intrapersonal and interpersonal, but he stuck to darkness, which has the power to save the world.
Coming back to the story of us, non {bat/super/spider} (wo)men, we also go through a lot of conflicts. But then, we often choose to go with the majority, as a young lady put it across recently, "if everyone else is bad, be bad and that's how we survive". In other words, we go with the flow and sincerely hope that it will camouflage us in the urban wilderness. Unfortunately it does; unfortunate for the world we live in, unfortunate for us. We pretend that life is going on fine and happy that we are living like everyone else. We comfortably turn a blind eye towards the root causes of all the problems and sufferings. We lose out a lot, living someone else's life, however much easy it is. Note that I used 'easy', not rewarding or exciting.
And even if you have all the wealth in the world and a Lucius Fox to provide you with the most modern armouries, you might not think about saving the world. It requires extraordinary will power and more than that, a heart to empathize. You need not be a superhero to save the world, there are (dark) knights like Narayanan Krishnan who continuously works towards a better world, towards brighter days. And, if saving the world is your call, rest assured, you will find a way out.
